If the world ends today,I would rather die a virgin than sleep with a guy who watches F.R.I.E.N.D.S

People who watch F.R.E.I.N.D.S should be shot. It is not funny. The only reason American people watch it is because of the good looking people in it (I have nothing against good-looking people, trust me). Indians watch it because it is a 'foreign' show.

I hate F.R.I.E.N.D.S. No logic or reason can make me love it. I don't care if I'm shallow. I don't care if people call me childish. Sorry, I just cannot respect other people's opinion on F.R.I.E.N.D.S and talk to them normally. How can you like someone who watches it?

Oh come on, you must have seen only one or two show, that also just for one or two minutes. Three to four years ago I thought it was a ridiculous show which contained third class jokes. But you should watch it from start. It's very beautiful, hell of comedy. One of the best comedy shows I ever watched.

Three or four year back, I thought it was funny but then I realized that I was watching it because everyone watched it..I found Seinfeld better..it is witty and I laughed out loud..

F.R.I.E.N.D.S (I just hate putting fullstop again and again)is pretty average when it comes to content.

Anyway, I know that I'm being childish here..it is not THAT bad..but somehow I have an aversion to that show..don't know why..I have an aversion towards idolizing them like Gods too. yuck.

I guess, many things are liked by people just for the heck of it. Avatar was visually brilliant and I like the passion of James Cameron (have read his interviews..when the budget of TITANIC went overboard, he sacrifced his salary!). But Avatar's script wasn't really creative or imaginative. Calling it imaginative would be wrong.

Anyway, who am I to criticize Cameron..I can criticize him only when I aqm making films :P

the last line of your comment is totally wrong. You should make a film just to stop people being fooled.
Remember what Toohey said in the writers house, that is the state of the society.People now do not care to decide for themselves, they do not care at all. They want to be on the right side, and FRIENDS and Avatar shall always be the right side.
I think Friends is nothing to be that exited about, either way. Tom and Jerry has less linear characters than it.

AbodhBalok said...

Right then, I am wrong in the first line. People are not being fooled, they are getting what they deserve

Sushmita said...

@ Walker

Hahaha! less linear! LMAO! Tom and Jerry is much more creative and FUNNY. Even Shinchan is better that FRIENDS.

Yes, Priyanka Chopra gets National Award and people like Nandita Das will always get 'critics choice'awards in shitty Film Fare awards. Bullshit lyrics like 'tere pyaar mein raat ko neend nahi aata aur din mein chain nahi milta" etc gets best lyrics award and an excellent lyricist like Piyush Mishra is ignored.
I went alone to watch 'Gulal' because none of my friends wanted to watch it (they didn't even know the name) and found just 10 people in the cinema hall. Very sad.

And you must have heard about the band Indian Ocean. Their music is 1000 times better than the cut-pritam (oppps copy)-paste bollywood music

But like you once said "its your choice..you want excellence or success?" ..The combination of both is rare.

Maybe things will change after few decades..change is slow...but I don't think this F.R.E.I.E.N.D.S v/s less popular but brilliant shows war will ever stop. There will be SRKs and Rahul Mahajans.I hope my grandson won't have to watch Rakhi Sawant ke granddaughter ka swayamvar.

I've never watched F.R.I.E.N.D.S. Im not going to watch F.R.I.E.N.D.S. some ppl may like its because there are these sweet people such good friends and all, but seriously, ive better things to do. Hmph! I DONT watch F.R.I.E.N.D.S. and that does *not* mean im uncool.

@ Prachi

Good Girl :P It's better to read a good book or watch Tom and Jerry.

Who cares if we are cool or uncool. The tags are given by newspapers like Bombay Times and channels like Zoom (isko mat dekho).

BTW thanks for the comment:)

Watched just one episode of FRIENDS (am lazy, won't put dot after every character :P ). It was just about enjoyable. Did not find it irresistible.

But that could also be because no one in my home watches English channels, except for Discovery or some news channels. Of the Indian comedies, one of the favorites was Sarabhai v/s Sarabhai.

And Tom and Jerry is one of the most intelligent thing produced by man. Other comedies I like are scary movie series - don't know if that makes my taste too base! ;)

That's one heck of a postulation, if i can say so! The only part I couldn't help but agree was "The only reason American people watch it is because of the good looking people in it." ....this is the ultimate truth.
I've been an avid watcher so I won't buy that the series was below par. It simply wasn't. In fact, it always came up with something new every single episode, using the same 6 characters to their best. It didn't go on for 10 yrs for nothing!
I hated it for just one simple reason: Life isn't abt sitting in a cafe or your room wearing designer dresses cracking excellent one-liners but that's what tubes are for! Right?!! :P

Anyways, everyone have an opinion but not all get to express it and I respect you for yours. Keep writing.

Sushmita said...

Hmmm

To each his own :)

I would watch Tom and Jerry

Sushmita said...

Ummmmm and aren't you someone popular from twitter?

Shakti_Shetty said...

I'm not that popular on timeline....just tweet coz no one dare to care what I say there unlike in the real world! :P

The main reason I can't watch something like (oh, what the hell, I'll just spell it without the capitals and periods) friends is that it requires me to be in a passive role, just an observer.

After I've watched a few episodes and gained an idea of the personalities of the characters, I can guess what is going to happen in the episode.

However, I can't share your sentiment. The show doesn't become abominable just because everybody tends to vaunt it.

The characters, though flat, are pretty well sketched (better than, in fact, characters in some movies).

However, the hallmark of the show is not the plot, nor the characters themselves. It's about the infinity that is the interaction between the characters, and I must say it is pretty well done.

The situations in the show are mostly results of factors internal to this interaction between the characters, rather than being external (This, at the same time, makes it unreal: the lives of these characters outside of each other hardly ever seems to affect them, except in a very synthetic manner).

As for Seinfeld, I can guess the plot almost 3/4th of the time.

P.S. I am not a friends fan, but neither do I think the show deserves this.

Whoops, I misused a word there.

I wrote "vaunt" where I meant "venerate"

rightly said..people out here watch it just for being identified amongnst the so called elite class..the snob value attached to it is quite high..

Hello!

I read your blog..you are an amazing amazing writer! take a bow!

and yes, I hate these 'intellectuals'..people who dissect a movie and drop names like De Sica and Tarkovsky just to sound intellectual...

thanks for dropping by

@Alok
I agree with you, actually...as I said..it is not THAT bad..not at all..it is funny in some places..have seen some episodes..but it is just my personal problem..I find them irritating,,,extremely irritating..it is all subjective

I love seinfeld..i don't know why, but I find it witty..extremely witty..you just laugh your ass off..on a given day, I would hang out with Jerry Seinfeld than with Mr. Matthew Perry (I forgot his character name) or Joey..but yes, Friends can be sometimes very touching and funny..I already said that..its just that I don't like watching it

I watch friends even though I think its childish. Its amusing. What's wrong with that? Btw, I'm 24 years old.

Aman said...

Btw, the whole concept of connectivity of the life on planet in Avatar was pretty cool. And I did watch Gulaal. I think a lot many people in my hostel did.

Oh man... I looked at your blog after such a long time and find this as a post... I absolutely adore Friends the characters gel together really nicely. I like most of the storylines tho now I get a feeling that many of them have been copied from Full House. Well lots of more reasons. I kinda liked Seinfeld but it's end was really disappointing not worthy of what they had put of for so long at all

A few months back I had posted an update on Facebook asking people which of the two TV shows they prefer: FRIENDS or The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. The reason being I am watching downloaded episodes of both the shows and am enjoying both of them very much.

Even though I enjoy both the shows, if I am to strictly choose one of them, my preference goes to the latter. It’s like, if I were asked to live on some secluded island for life with the DVDs of either of the two shows alone, then I would prefer Holmes anytime. However, I could never get around the “why” of it. Since I enjoy watching both the shows (equally, I can say), this inner voice telling me to choose Holmes confused me.

Holmes is intellectually demanding. It makes you think; use your brains while watching it. It is not hilarious; rather serious. It appeals to your higher faculties. I think if the person is extensively making use of his higher faculties in life (that is, he is an intellectual), only then can Holmes can appeal to him to the degree it does to me. Whereas, FRIENDS is something one can watch keeping one’s brains aside. It is too mundane. But it’s fun to watch all the same. So, it’s very difficult to understand why I would prefer Holmes.

The confusion remained in my mind until one day I came across one blog post which talked about the difference between art and titillation. To quote from that blog –

While good art – a great novel, movie, painting, etc. – will distract you from your problems, it will also make you see things in a new light; it expands your awareness somehow. You step away from it with a new perspective. Titillation, on the other hand, has the same power to distract (maybe even more power), but it is an empty shell. It arouses our baser desires and demands nothing more: no message, no meaning, no attempt to stir the soul. Just cheap thrills for the senses...

I am not too sure whether you’ll see how it relates to the topic, but for me, the moment I read this part on the blog I immediately related it with my dilemma and realized why my inner voice was telling me to choose Holmes. I see it very clearly now. FRIENDS is like titillation. It is.

However, while I would prefer intellectually demanding pieces of art thousand times over, I can’t deny that I still enjoy watching FRIENDS. It IS like titillation, but I do get titillated. And I don’t think there’s anything wrong about it. I see that there are two types of people. Those who ONLY like titillation; and those who like (and even prefer) real art (as defined in the quoted excerpt), but are also affected by titillation. (If you are the third type then that is but admirable.) While I myself don’t keep a good opinion of the first type, the second type includes me too.

It was a good exercise. Thanks! :)
